Nadal defends Phelps

World No.1 Rafael Nadal showed understanding for the 14-time Olympic champion Michael Phelps, after the press publicized a picture of Phelps inhalating from a bong.

The scandal around the best swimmer of all time errupted over one week ago as News of the World publicized a picture of Phelps smoking during a party at the University of South Carolina last November. The 8 time gold medalist from Beijing Olympic Games admitted he was on the picture.

Phelps got heavily criticized by the media, but surprisingly not by Rafael Nadal. The Spaniard, a gold medalist at last year's Olympics himself, showed understanding for the swimming sensation from USA.

"It does not portray the best possible image, but everyone can have a slip-up. In the end sportsmen are just not machines. Everyone is free to do whatever they want."

"He has been on holiday for some time. He has attained all his goals and he is taking a sabbatical leave and he is totally free to be able to do it. He will have plenty of time to get back and prepare for the coming Games." Nadal told the reporters.

Well, expect pics of Phelps and Nadal soon sharing the bong...
