A shocking start to day 6 at the Australian Open 2008 - Agnieszka Radwańska has just beaten the world number 2 Svetlana Kuznetsova 6/3 6/4 causing at the same time a major surprise!
But was it really such a great surprise?
Radwańska has already established herself as a world beater. The scalp of Kuznetsova was the 5th top ten win in the young career of the polish shooting star!
Kuznetsova never really got her game togather even when she made up for the 0/3 deficit in the first set. After she leveled up the match at 3 all, it was once again the young Pole, who took the advantage of the Russians mistakes of the backhand and at the net.
The second set was a whole different story with Kuznetsova racing off to a 3/0 lead. This time around it was the no. 29 seed from Poland, who managed to level at 3 all. After both players being able to hold their serve in the next two games, it was Radwanska who was able to take more risks and eventually serving the match out after saving two break points in the last game.
“This is a pretty tough loss because I think I’ve been in the best shape ever in Australian Open, and I just didn’t make it work,” Kuznetsova told reporters.
"It’s pretty simple. I think I beat myself up out there, so I didn’t do much right things.
"I was not playing against her, I was playing against me.”
It was the first win in four career meetings the talented Pole scored against the Russian. Radwanska will now meet the winner of the match between no 14 seed Nadia Petrova and her compatriot Ekatarina Makarova.
