Mauresmo falls to the joy of the Australian fans

The fitht day of the Aussie Open brought a huge surprise in the womens field.
The spectators could once again witness the mental breakdown of the no. 18 seed and former champion of this event Amelie Mauresmo.
The frenchwoman, who had a disastrous last year is still looking to regain the form that saw her claim the number one ranking and two Grand Slam titles in 2006.What on paper looked like an easy path to the fourth round turned out to be a tricky rubber. Dellacqua surprised Mauresmo with her agressive style of play and mental toughness. This loss marks the second time this year where the former world no. 1 can't get the better of a lefty, earlier this year losing in straight sets to Patty Schnyder.
In the third set the 22-year old from Perth squandered a 3-1 lead, but was able to recover after she saw Mauresmo struggle with her serve and forehand.
In the end Amélie started coming to the net because she was running out of ideas from the back of the court.
With this win Dellacqua unofficially became the new Australian Number One, as the rankings will be released on Monday in a week time.

In other matches the higher ranked players managed to ease through to the fourth round. The only seed to lose a set was Jelena Jankovic, who couldn't take advantage of a set and 4/2 lead, eventually winning 6/1 4/6 6/2.
We also saw another signs of struggle from Justine Henin, but the Belgian was able not to loose a set against a tricky opponent in Francesca Schiavone from Italy. Next up for Henin is the qualifier from Taipe Su Wei Hsieh, who defeated Aravane Rezai in three sets

What turned out to be a little surprise was the ease with which Elena Dementieva firmly destroyed the Israeli no 1 Shahar Peer. The Russian expected a three-hour match against Peer, but then began finding the lines and ended up with a 6/2 6/0 result. Dementieva will now face tennis beauty Maria Sharapova for a place in the quarterfinals. The two met 9 times with the older of the two Russians winning only two rubbers. “She so powerful and always seems to find the comers , plus she fights very hard.” Dementieva said. “I have to make her run because she doesn’t like to do that, but it’s not easy.”
